What internet speed do I need?

StelloTV streams over your normal home internet, so the speed and stability of your connection decide the picture quality you get. The good news is that most broadband plans are more than enough. Here is what you need, how to check it, and how to plan for several screens.

    Recommended speed per stream

SD quality: 5 Mbps per stream. HD (720p and 1080p): 10 Mbps per stream. 4K Ultra HD: 25 Mbps per stream.

These numbers are for each device watching at the same time. Stability matters as much as speed: a connection that holds a steady 15 Mbps is better for live TV than one that jumps between 5 and 100 Mbps.

    How to test your speed

    1. Turn on the device you watch on and connect it to your normal Wi-Fi or cable.
    2. Open a browser on that device, or on a phone next to the TV on the same network, and go to speedtest.net or fast.com.
    3. Run the test three times at the hour you usually watch, for example in the evening.
    4. Use the lowest download result as your real speed when you compare it with the numbers above.

    Planning for several devices

Add the speed of every stream that runs at the same time. Two HD screens and one 4K screen need about 10 + 10 + 25 = 45 Mbps, plus some room for phones and laptops. StelloTV plans support up to 10 connections, so check your total before adding more.

Get the most from your connection

    1. Use an Ethernet cable for the TV or box when you can.
    2. Place the router in an open spot, away from walls and other electronics.
    3. Use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band for streaming devices close to the router.
    4. Restart the router once a week to clear memory and refresh the connection.
